How to scan an interior space (LiDAR)

Model a space in real-time with our LiDAR interior scan experience. From start to finish, the average interior LiDAR scan only takes 15 minutes, including receiving the following:

  • Detailed measurements (including cabinets, walls, windows, opening, and doors)

  • 2D and 3D sketch floor plans

  • Property and damage photos

Universal vs LiDAR Interior Scan

This article covers our LiDAR Interior scan experience, which only works with certain devices (iPhone 12 Pro and later, iPad Pro 2020 and later). If you don't have a LiDAR device, reference this article for the universal scan experience.

What is the difference between the experiences?

Can I switch between experiences?

If you are on a professional Hover account and have a LiDAR device, the app will default to the LiDAR scan experience. Policyholders will default to the Universal flow.

You can also use the Universal Scan experience on a LiDAR device. To adjust your settings:

  1. Tap on the settings icon in the Hover app

  2. Open "Account settings"

  3. To disable LiDAR, toggle "Interiors LiDAR Capture" off. Toggle on to enable LiDAR.

1) Start a new project


To start a new interior scan:

  • Select Measure from the home screen or tap the plus sign (+)

  • Select Scan interiors

  • Fill out the property information and tap Get started

2) Enter the number of floors you expect to scan


Use the (-) and (+) on the next screen to input the number of floors you expect to scan. Don't worry - you can add more later on as well!

3) Scan a room


If applicable, we recommend that you start with an average or large-sized room first.

  • Tap Start scan

  • Your device may need to calibrate. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  • Point your camera at a wall

    • You will see white lines outline the room and the model will begin forming at the bottom of your screen

      • Try different angles

      • If an area is not recognized, scan the rest of the room and go back to that area

    • Once you're confident the scan is complete, tap Done with this room

  • Rotate and zoom in on the model to check that all the walls, openings, and cabinets are included and then tap Continue

4) Add photos (optional)


If you do not want to add optional photos for a room, tap Scan more space to skip this step, or tap Done if you're ready to submit the project.

After you scan each space, you will have an opportunity to take photos of the room for your records.

  • Tap Add photos

  • Take as many pictures as you need, then tap Continue

  • You can review the photos from the gallery, and add more if desired

Please note that these are the only photos that will be saved to the project.

5) Scan another space (optional)


For the model to generate successfully, each room captured should be connected by another captured room, creating a photo trail throughout the space.

Each space scanned should be on the same floor. See Step 6 for information on scanning a new floor.

If you have another space on the same floor to scan:

  • Tap Scan another room on this level

  • When finished scanning, tap Finish this room

  • Review the model, tap Continue, and then repeat for as many rooms on the same floor as needed

  • When you're done with the floor, tap Review this level

6) Scan another floor (optional)


You can add another floor, if desired: Each floor will be processed as a separate project. Once returned, each scan can be imported into Xactimate and then merged.

  • Tap Add a room or level from the Review level screen

    • Your first scan will be submitted, and a new project will start automatically

7) Rename, add, or delete rooms (optional)


From the Review level screen, you can view the scan as a 3D floor plan or list view, add or delete rooms, and customize the room names of the model, if desired.

To rename a room:

  • Tap the room label

  • Edit the name

  • Tap Save

  • Tap Done

8) Receive measurements and model


In about a minute, you will receive the measurements, model, and any manually added photos in the Hover app.

Quickly import the data into Xactimate or Claims connect to complete your estimate.

Note: Any photos you manually added to the project will be available through the integrations.

Troubleshooting Tips


The app has several built-in notifications to guide you through the process and ensure you have a successful experience.

Overheated device

Long scanning sessions may cause LiDAR devices to overheat. You will receive warnings if this starts to happen.

  • Tap Save and continue later

  • We will save your progress

  • It typically just takes a few minutes to cool down

Merging issue

If you see a "Merging issue" notification, it means you may not have successfully scanned the connected space between rooms.

For all desired rooms to be included in the final floor plan, all adjoining hallways, landings, etc. must also be scanned.

  • Return to the previously captured space and scan again.

Tracking lost

If you see the "Tracking lost" notification, aim your camera at the location you were scanning prior to seeing this message.

Device memory full

If you see a notification to "Please restart the app", this means your device ran out of memory.

  • Tap Save and continue later

  • Close the app fully: leave the app and swipe to close it on your phone

  • Reopen the app

  • Go to the Properties tab

  • Select your draft and continue where you left off

Exit scan

If you attempt to exit the app while in the process of completing a scan, you will see an "Are you sure?" notification:

  • Tap Continue scan to resume with the scan

  • Tap Exit scan to confirm you want to exit - The data of your current scan will be erased, and a new scan of the room will be required.
