How to scan an interior space (Universal)

Resolve interior claims quickly, with confidence. Works with any smart device.

Updated over a week ago

Our interior scan experience makes it easier for you to resolve claims quickly, with confidence. It only takes a smart device and about 15 minutes.

Once the scan has been processed, you will receive:

  • Detailed measurements (including cabinets, walls, windows, opening, and doors)

  • 2D and 3D sketch floor plans

  • Property and damage photos

  • Virtual walkthrough of the space

We are currently testing improvements to this experience. If what you are seeing in the Hover app does not match what is detailed below, reach out to our support team for any assistance.

In the following sections, click the expand arrows to reveal more or collapse information.

Universal vs LiDAR Interior Scan

This article covers our Universal Interior scan experience, which works with any smart device. If you have a LiDAR device, the Hover app may default to our LiDAR-specific workflow.

What is the difference between the experiences?

Can I switch between experiences?

If you are on a professional Hover account and have a LiDAR device, the app will default to the LiDAR scan experience. Policyholders will default to the Universal flow.

You can also use the Universal Scan experience on a LiDAR device. To adjust your settings:

  1. Tap on the settings icon in the Hover app

  2. Open "Account settings"

  3. To disable LiDAR, toggle "Interiors LiDAR Capture" off. Toggle on to enable LiDAR.

Video: How to scan an interior space

Take advantage of this short video to learn how to scan an interior space with the universal experience, or continue reading below for a step-by-step guide.

1) Start a new project

  • From the home screen, select Measure or tap the plus sign (+)

  • Select Scan interiors

  • Fill out the property information and tap Get started

2) Add damage photos

If you do not need to document damaged areas, tap No to skip to the next step.

To take photos of damaged areas:

  • Tap Yes when prompted

  • Review instructions and tap Continue

  • Tap the shutter button to take as many photos as you want, then tap Continue

3) Select label and scan a space

If applicable, we recommend that you start with an average or large-sized room first.

  • Tap Continue on the instructional screen

  • Tap Start scan

  • Select a label for the space and specify its size, if applicable

  • Follow the instructions on the screen (see below for more details)

  • Once finished, tap Done with the space to continue

  • Tap Finished with this floor or Scan another space on this floor to scan more rooms on the same floor

For large spaces

For small spaces:

  • Walk toward the space with your phone up, entering through the doorway

  • Keep your back to the wall with your phone aimed at the center of the room, walk the perimeter, stopping where you started.

    • Keep the floor and ceiling within the frame

    • No need to step on or move furniture, just move around it

  • If there is not enough room to walk the perimeter of the space, follow the steps below instead

  • Scan the space from the doorway, moving your camera in a slow up and down motion

  • Record every part of the room

    • Don't worry about keeping the floor and ceiling in view at the same time

4) Scan another space (optional)

For the model to generate successfully, each room captured should be connected by another captured room, creating a photo trail throughout the space. Please remember to capture hallways as their own room, especially if they go in multiple directions (example an L-shaped hallway).

Each space scanned should be on the same floor. See Step 5 for information on scanning a new floor.

a) Record entering the space

  • Before you scan an additional space on the same floor, keep your phone up and record while you walk to the adjacent room or hallway

    • This will help the app stitch together the spaces into a connected floor plan

  • Tap Done with this space once you reach the next room

b) Scan the additional space

  • Start scanning the next space, following the same instructions above

  • Repeat until finished with current floor

  • Tap Finished with this floor

5) Review and submit scan

Once you have scanned all applicable spaces, you will have the opportunity to review your rooms, make any desired edits, or start scanning a new floor from the Room review page.

a) Edit rooms

Deleting photo(s)

  • Tap on a space to view the photos

  • Tap on a photo

  • Tap the trash can in the top right corner

Re-name a space

  • Tap on a space to open it

  • Tap the 3 dots in the top right corner

  • Tap Edit name

  • Type custom name and tap Save

Delete a space

  • Tap the space to open it

  • Tap the 3 dots in the top right corner

  • Tap Delete space

b) Scan a new floor

Once you have scanned all desired spaces on the current floor, you will have the opportunity to start scanning a new floor on the Room Review page. The property details (address, claim number, etc) will automatically be applied to the project.

If you have additional floor(s) to scan:

  • Tap Start a new floor and repeat the process above for each floor scanned

  • Add as many floors as needed - there is no limit

  • Each floor will be returned as a separate order. Once returned, each project can be automatically imported into Xactimate or CoreLogic and then merged

c) Submit scan(s)

  • Tap Upload when you're ready to submit the project.

  • Turnaround time varies by the square footage being scanned. Typically spaces less than 1,000 sq ft will be returned within 3 hours. You will receive a notification via email once the project is ready for review.

Re-scanning incomplete rooms

If we are unable to generate a full model for the space, you will not be charged for undelivered (incomplete) rooms.

  • Page 2 of the PDF will show any incomplete rooms, as well as what you can do to successfully rescan them

  • Start a new project to rescan the previously undelivered room(s). This will be processed and billed as its own project.
