How to scan an interior space (Universal)

Resolve interior claims quickly, with confidence. Works with any smartphone or tablet.

Updated yesterday

Our interior scan experience makes it easier for you to resolve claims quickly, with confidence. It only takes a smartphone or tablet and about 15 minutes.

Once the scan has been processed, you will receive:

  • Detailed measurements (including cabinets, walls, windows, opening, and doors)

  • 2D and 3D sketch floor plans

  • Property and damage photos

  • Virtual walkthrough of the space

  • Direct sketch and measurements imported into Xactimate and Cotality (FKA CoreLogic)

We are currently testing improvements to this experience. If what you are seeing in the Hover app does not match what is detailed below, reach out to our support team for any assistance.

In the following sections, click the expand arrows to reveal more or collapse information.

Universal vs LiDAR Interior Scan

This article covers our Universal Interior scan experience, which works with any smart device. If you have a LiDAR device, the Hover app may default to our LiDAR-specific workflow.

What is the difference between the experiences?

Can I switch between experiences?

If you are on a professional Hover account and have a LiDAR device, the app will default to the LiDAR scan experience. Policyholders will default to the Universal flow.

You can also use the Universal Scan experience on a LiDAR device. To adjust your settings:

  1. Tap on the settings icon in the Hover app

  2. Open "Account settings"

  3. To disable LiDAR, toggle "off" Interiors LiDAR Scan (in the image below, it is "off")

  4. To enable LiDAR, toggle "on" Interiors LiDAR Scan

Video: How to scan an interior space

Take advantage of this short video to learn how to scan an interior space with the universal experience, or continue reading below for a step-by-step guide.

1) Start a new project

  • From the home screen, tap the plus sign (+)

  • Select Interior

  • Fill out the property information and tap Get started

2) Enter the number of floors you expect to scan

Use the (-) and (+) on the next screen to input the number of floors you expect to scan. Don't worry - you can add more later on as well!

3) Add damage photos

If you do not need to document damaged areas, tap I don't have any damage to skip to the next step.

To take photos of damaged areas:

  • Tap Start when prompted

  • Review instructions and tap Continue

  • Tap the shutter button to take as many photos as you want, then tap Next

4) Select label and scan a space

If applicable, we recommend that you start with an average or large-sized room first.

  • Tap Start scan on the instructional screen

  • Select a label for the space

  • Follow the instructions on the screen

  • When you're done with the room, tap Finish this room

  • Tap Yes or No when asked if you want to add another room on the same level

For large spaces

For small spaces:

  • Walk toward the space with your phone up, entering through the doorway

  • Keep your back to the wall with your phone aimed at the center of the room, walk the perimeter, stopping where you started.

    • Keep the floor and ceiling within the frame

    • No need to step on or move furniture, just move around it

  • If there is not enough room to walk the perimeter of the space, follow the steps below instead

  • Scan the space from the doorway, moving your camera in a slow up and down motion

  • Record every part of the room

    • Don't worry about keeping the floor and ceiling in view at the same time

5) Scan another space (optional)

For the model to generate successfully, each room that's scanned should be "connected" by other scanned rooms, creating a photo trail throughout the space. Please remember to scan hallways as their own space, especially if they go in multiple directions (example: an L-shaped hallway).

Each space scanned should be on the same floor. See Step 6b for information on scanning a new floor.

a) Record entering the space

  • Before you scan an additional space on the same floor, keep your phone up as you walk to the entryway of the next room.

    • This will help the app stitch together the spaces into a connected floor plan

  • Tap Start next room once you reach the new room to scan.

b) Scan the additional space

  • Start scanning the next space, following the same instructions above

  • Repeat the process until finished with current floor

6) Review and submit scan

Once you have scanned all applicable spaces on the current floor, you will have the opportunity to review your room images, make any desired edits, or start scanning a new level from the Review level page.

(Optional step) Scan a new level:

From this screen, you will also have the opportunity to start a new level. The property details (address, claim number, etc) will automatically be applied to this next project.

  • Tap Add more + at the bottom of the Review level page, then choose between adding a room or adding a level.

    • Repeat the process above for each level scanned

    • Add as many levels as needed - there is no limit

    • Each level will be returned as a separate floor plan order. Once returned, each project can be imported into Xactimate or Cotality (FKA CoreLogic), then merged.

a) Submit scan(s)

  • Tap Submit when you're ready to upload the project.

  • Turnaround time varies by the square footage being scanned. Typically spaces less than 1,000 sq ft will be returned within 3 hours. You will receive a notification via email once the project is ready for review.

b) Add a reference measurement

Depending on the size of the floor plan, you may see a prompt while the job is uploading to add a reference measurement.

  • Tap Measure now on the notification, then Continue

  • Select a photo from the project gallery

  • Use your finger to place the endpoints on the wall or door in the photo

  • Tap Continue

  • Hand measure the part of the door or wall you've outlined in the photo, then enter the measurement into the app

  • Tap Next

  • Tap Submit, then Finish

Re-scanning incomplete rooms

If we are unable to generate a full model for the space, you will not be charged for undelivered (incomplete) rooms.

  • Page 2 of the PDF will show any incomplete rooms, as well as what you can do to successfully rescan them

  • Start a new project to rescan the previously undelivered room(s). This will be processed and billed as its own project.
