Create a material list

You can easily generate and edit a material list all from within your Hover account

Updated over a week ago

Once you've received Hover measurements for a property you can generate a material list from either the mobile or web app.

A material list can be created from any exterior Hover measurement report, regardless of whether the measurements were extracted from photos or a blueprint, or as a roof-only or complete (roofing and siding) report.

Course: How to Create a Material List

Take advantage of this short, interactive walkthrough to learn how to create a material list, or continue reading below for an overview of how the process works.

Click the expand arrows to reveal more or collapse information.

1. Tap material list

Navigate to the property and tap Material list

  • From the My Properties page, open the property details and click the Material list button to begin

  • This will generate a list of templates for you to use

2. Select templates

You have the ability to select multiple material styles for a single trade. Choose as many templates as you need for your project scope.

Select the template(s) you want to use for each trade, based on your project scope:

  • If you or an admin has saved templates to your account, you'll see them first under the Custom template section

    • If you haven't saved templates yet, you'll only see the option to choose templates from the Hover Library.

  • To find the template you need, search by the manufacturer, product line, trade, material type/substrate, and more! If you're still unable to find the template you’re looking for, you can request a specific template by selecting the "Need another template?" option.

    • Note: Our manufacturer / branded templates are developed in collaboration with the manufacturers, themselves. We are actively working on partnerships to expand our Hover Template Library of ready-made templates.

  • When finished, click either:

    • Create Material List

    • Or click Select partial area if you only want to apply one material on a single facade (ex: front of house for curb appeal)

*Stone and brick templates coming soon

Note: if the job has roof only measurements, it will only be able to calculate roofing templates. Other trade templates will appear in the selection menu but if chosen, those values will show as 0.

3. Select area(s)

This step only applies if you've chosen multiple materials for a single trade. If you've only chosen (1) material template, skip ahead to the "Review material list" section.

Tap Continue to area selection:

Apply materials on the interactive 3D model:

  • Based on the project scope, apply the materials by tapping on the model (zoom and rotate), or by tapping on the labeled area boxes

  • Note that only one material can be applied per facet

When finished, click Create Material List

Note: You can create multiple material takeoffs for the same project:

Whether you want to create Good/Better/Best options for your customer or you want material lists for multiple trades, create additional material takeoffs in (1) of (2) ways:

From the project page:

  • Tap the Materials tab

  • Tap + Material List

From an existing material list:

  • Open an existing Material List

  • Tap Edit Scope

4. Review the material list

Once your templates have been selected, Hover will automatically prepare a list of the material quantities for each trade, with default values for installation and waste preferences.

You can make edits to the material list by either editing line items or updating the project scope.

Editing the project scope

Clicking the Summary button at the top of a material list is the fastest way to review the calculations. If something looks inaccurate, you can edit the scope at any time.

Other reasons to edit the project scope include:

1. Your job has unique install and waste preferences, for example:

  • Update ice and water calculations

  • Apply gutter apron on eaves instead of rather drip edge

  • Include metal flashing on valleys

2. You've requested to have your property measurements reprocessed:

  • If you've requested to have your property measurements reprocessed to reflect any measurement updates, addition or removal of gutters and downspouts etc., you should use the edit scope feature to access the most current material quantities based on the revised measurements

  • NOTE: Editing the project scope will generate a new material list. Previously generated material lists can be retrieved from the project page > Materials tab.

Quick links

  • You can easily reference which trades were selected at the top of the material list and see, at a glance, how many material line items were included in that template.

  • Clicking the trade buttons (i.e. Siding, Roof, etc.) will help quickly navigate to the items for that trade.

Line items

  • For each line item, you can make inline edits to the name, color/variation, quantities, etc. Plus, you can change the unit of measure by using the UoM selection dropdown menu.

Calculation details (line item waste and coverage)

  • Click the calculator icon to review how the material quantity was calculated. You can also adjust waste factor coverage for the particular line item.

    • Each template will have a default waste factor which you'll see in the Measurements column. The waste value set at the line item level will take precedence over the waste factor selected at the template level.

    • If you change the product of a line item, you need to ensure the coverage specified matches the selected product. It will not recalculate automatically based on product name changes.

    • To adjust the waste or coverage:

      • Click the calculator icon

      • Click into the Waste field, manually type your desired waste factor

      • Click into the Coverage field, manually type your desired value

      • Click Update

Unit costs and total material costs

  • Material costs are not added by default. However, you can manually add in the costs for each line item and save those figures as a part of your template for future use.

  • As unit costs are updated, the total cost for materials will be reflected in the box at the top of the material list.

Add material

  • Click + material in the top right corner of the material list to add a new line item.

    • Fill out the material information in the pop-up screen

    • Tap Add material

5. Download and share

If you're satisfied with how your material list looks, download and share it as a PDF or CSV.
