Scope trim in 3D and send it to your estimate

How to scope trim directly on your 3D model and send it straight to your estimate with no manual re-entry.

What's New? The new Edit Trim workflow in the 3D Design experience lets you scope trim directly on the 3D model - choosing which walls get trim, adding and sizing individual trim boards, and applying product, color, and width. Then transfer it directly into your estimate with no manual re-entry required.

Overview

You can now scope trim directly on the 3D model, then transfer it into your estimate. When you first open the model in 3D Design, the trim from the original scan is visible for reference, grouped by facade, with measurements available in linear feet. To make changes to the trim’s color, width, and more, use the Edit Trim button which will open a guided flow.

Note: This update is part of a phased release and may not be available to all users yet. If your experience looks different, or you'd like early access, please contact our Support team.

How to use it

Entering the 3D experience:

From the property details page, selecting either 3D Design, or the 3D option in the Measurements card will bring you into the same 3D experience with views of the model to fit what you need to do.

  • 3D entry point: Opens the 3D model with materials view

  • Measurements card entry point: Opens the 3D model with measurement view

Editing trim on the 3D model:

  • Select the trim category from the top of the Material Group panel

  • To open the guided flow, you can select Edit Trim from the Material Group panel or from the Action Bar.

  • Choose the wall(s)/facade(s) you want trim on. Use the facets menu to deselect specific areas if needed.

  • Review inferred trim: The trim which already exists on the house will be pre-selected as a starting point.

  • Add any additional trim types you want — level base, outside corners, freeze boards, and more — and set a custom width for each as needed.

  • Use the drill-down flow to assign product, brand, and color. Preview color changes directly on the model.

  • To adjust groups or individual boards: Select a whole material group to change its width or color, or select a single board to override it without affecting the rest of the group.

  • If you need to remove a board, select it and choose Remove from its options menu.

  • Save your design, then create or update your estimate. Trim shows up as its own line item(s), broken out by width and color.

Note: This flow is technically functional on mobile, but the desktop or tablet experience is recommended for this level of detail.

Why this is better

  • Matches how trim is actually ordered: Scoping ties to real edges and is measured in linear feet, rather than the square footage used before.

  • Faster quotes: Build a complete siding and trim quote before leaving the appointment, with no manual re-entry or follow-up visit.

  • Better homeowner conversations: Visualizing trim packages on the model makes it easier to show the value of upgrading (e.g., why a fuller trim package with thicker base trim and freeze boards costs more, when the customer can see the difference on their own house.)

Why is trim now measured in linear feet instead of square feet?

Linear feet is how trim is actually ordered and priced, so the new experience measures and estimates it that way. If you're used to checking quantities in square feet from the old experience, expect a different unit here.

Will my existing custom trim templates work with this 3D-to-estimate flow?

Not automatically. If trim is its own custom template, it needs to be migrated to the new linear-foot system first. If trim is part of a custom siding template, it needs to be pulled into its own separate trim template instead. Hover’s 3D trim does not flow into a combined siding+trim estimation template.

Either way, your existing templates keep working as-is in your normal, non-3D estimating flow in the meantime.

Can I still convert a wall to trim, or split trim the way I do today?

No, both the wall-to-trim convert tool and the trim split tool are being removed. If you need trim along a new edge, split the wall first, then use Edit Trim to add trim to it.

Does this work for decorative trim that isn't on a straight edge?

Not currently. Decorative trim not tied to a modeled edge line can't be added or removed using this tool.

Can I edit trim around windows and doors?

  • For a single window or door modeled on its own, new trim replaces the old trim around that opening the same as anywhere else.

  • For a group of openings modeled together (e.g., several windows side by side sharing one continuous trim band) the shared trim connecting them can't currently be removed. You can add new trim around the outside of the group, but the trim between the individual openings inside it stays as-is.
