How do I customize an estimate?

Easily modify the project scope, make in-line edits, and Save as Template to create custom templates for future projects.

Updated today

We're rolling out a new and updated experience! If your app looks different, you may be on our legacy experience.

Once your templates have been selected, Hover automatically generates a list of material and labor quantities for each trade, with default values for installation and waste preferences.

Click the expand arrows to reveal more or collapse information.

Key features of an estimate

Your production-ready estimate is grouped into three distinct sections: Materials, Labor, and Other. You can review details at a high level, or fine-tune line items as needed.

Add, edit, remove, or replace any line item(s) based on your project scope.

Click the expandable arrows below to learn more.

Property

The property card in the top left of the estimation view allows you to easily access main details of the project such as the Measurement PDF (tap Measurements), the 3D model, (tap 3D), and the Project Details Page (tap Details).

Project details

The project details card in the top center of the estimation view allows you to view details about the estimate such as:

  • When it was created, and by whom

  • Version history

  • The total number of trades and templates included in the estimate

  • Whether or not a proposal has already been created

  • Ability to start a proposal

  • Ability to view the project scope summary

Financials

The Financials card will update in real time as you make in-line edits to pricing details. The total cost for Materials, Labor, and Other sections will populate here along with your total markup percentage, and profit margin if applicable. If tax rates have been added at a line item level, the tax amount will be calculated into the total cost, as well.

Materials, Labor, and Other sections

  • The Materials section contains material line items for all the trades that were originally selected as part of the project scope, along with automated quantity calculations based on Hover's property measurements.

  • The Labor section includes each template and its associated labor cost. Similar to the material line items, labor line items are also automatically associated to Hover's property measurements.

  • The Other section is located at the bottom of the estimate. Unlike material and labor line items, Hover's measurements for the project are not associated with the "Other" line items. Use in-line editing to account for associated costs like permits, dumpsters, etc.

Trade quick links

Beside the Materials and Labor section headings are trade links that give you at-a-glance references to which trades are included, as well as how many line items exist per trade. Clicking a trade link (e.g. Siding, Roof, etc.) will quickly navigate to the items for that particular trade.

In-line editing capabilities

You can make minor adjustments or apply detailed customizations to a template by editing line items manually. Then, save your template to skip the manual entry next time.

Here's a breakdown of each key features of a line item:

  • Swap out material profiles:

    • If a template has multiple material variations associated with it, Hover defaults to an option and lets you change it for another profile with the Suggested Items prompt.

    • Select an alternative profile from the suggested items drop down, and the quantities will update automatically.

The suggested items functionality is available with a limited number of templates (e.g. Hardie Plank, Diamond Kote lap siding, etc.)

  • Search by brand or product:

    • Depending on whether your account has been integrated with a supplier (ABC, QXO, or SRS), you may be able to search for specific products and SKUs offered by suppliers.

      • When your Hover account is connected to a specific supplier, the product search functionality is automatically filtered to display products exclusively from the connected supplier(s) and their available branches.

      • If you forget the exact item name, you can use keywords or the Supplier item SKU / number and the system will search for items available based on your account settings.

  • Add a Note

    • Use the in-line Note field to include any install instructions, substitution requests, or other details on a per-line-item basis.

  • Update product colors or variations

    • After updating the product name, use the variation drop down to assign or change colors or other associated variations.

  • Update coverage and waste factor calculations

    • Each template will have a default waste factor which you'll see in the Measurements column. To review how a material quantity or labor line item was calculated, or to update waste factor coverage for a particular line item, click the calculator icon:

If you change the product of a line item, ensure the specified coverage matches the selected product. It will not recalculate automatically based on product name changes.

The waste value set at the line item level takes precedence over the waste factor selected at the template level.

Unit costs, Markup, and Tax rates

  • Line item pricing is not added by default. However, you can manually add that information at the line level, and save those figures as a part of your template for future use.

    • As unit costs are updated, the total cost for materials, labor, and other items will be reflected in the Financials panel at the top of the estimate.

    • Similarly, if markup percentages are added to one or more line items, the total Markup percentage and dollar amount will update in real time.

    • You can also set a tax rate percentage at the line level. The sales tax dollar amount will be configured into the estimate's Total price.

Duplicate a line item

Click the copy icon to duplicate any line item between sections.

For example:

  • If you add a new material line item to a section, duplicate it to the Labor section to quickly calculate it's associated labor costs. Duplicated items retain measurements and auto-calculate in saved templates on future jobs.

Edit scope

Reasons to use the Edit scope feature include:

If your project scope has unique install and waste preferences

For example, you may need to:

  • Update ice and water calculations

  • Apply gutter apron on eaves instead of rather drip edge

  • Include metal flashing on valleys

If you've requested to have your property measurements recalculated

If the property data was reprocessed to reflect any measurement updates, addition or removal of gutters and downspouts etc., you should use the edit scope feature to access the most current material quantities based on the revised measurements.

Tap Edit scope from the estimate, then:

  • Select all trade(s) and template(s) that apply

  • Review the facades and line segments for each trade

  • Adjust the waste factor(s) - Slide the bar or manually type your percentage

    • You can make manual waste adjustments for roof or siding, and check the box to set Hover's recommended waste percentage if applicable.

  • Update preferences and accessories

  • Tap Create Estimate

    • You will be redirected to the estimation view to see the changes.

Editing the project scope will generate a new estimate. Previously generated estimates can be retrieved from the project details page, from the Estimates card.

Save as template

Planning to use the same customizations often? Click Save as template to create and reuse custom templates for future projects - making the bidding process even faster while on-the-go or using the mobile app!

How it works:

Once you are satisfied with any necessary customizations you made, click Save as template in the middle of the screen.

  • Select the template(s) to save

  • Revise the name of the template(s) (Optional)

  • Check or uncheck the box to Update unit costs, markups, and tax rates

  • Click Save

Moving forward, you will see that particular saved template as one of the selectable options in your Custom template library when creating future estimates.

Updating existing custom templates is just as easy:

  • Open the existing custom template

  • Make your updates (ex: adjustments to product name(s), waste factor(s), unit cost(s), etc.)

  • Click Save as template

  • Check the box beside the template name

  • Check the box beside Update template

  • Click Save
