How to use 3D design mode in scoping conversations.

Updated over a week ago

When you are ready to start designing, go to the Project Details Page and open the Design card on web or mobile app. This takes you into Hover Workspace, where you will choose between two modes: 2D Design and 3D Design. Both tools work together to help you guide homeowners from early inspiration to a fully scoped project.

  • 2D mode is where you start when you want to create quick, photorealistic designs from a single photo. It is ideal for helping homeowners explore ideas, compare styles, and get clear on what they want before you talk through measurements or pricing. This is the fastest way to spark interest, build confidence, and move the conversation forward.

  • 3D mode is used once you have a full scan of the home and the scaled model is ready for review. Here, you can view and edit the property in 3D, work with precise facets, apply materials with full control, and prepare the design for estimating. This mode is built for scoping decisions and connecting design choices directly to the estimate.

We're rolling out a new and updated experience! If your app looks different, you may be on our legacy experience.

Starting a design project

2D Design can be used with a single photo before a scan or with photos from a completed scan. 3D Design becomes available once the scan has been completed and processed. Together, these options let you choose the right starting point based on where you are in the project.

3D design after a scan

  • Open the Project Details Page once the scan is complete and processed.

  • Selects the 3D card to open the model in Hover Workspace or the Measurements card and tap 3D

  • Use the material menu to apply products to walls, roofs, trim, and other facets.

  • Rotate and zoom around the model to review the design, check details, and prepare it for estimating.

Switching between 2D and 3D modes

Inside Hover Workspace, you can switch between 2D and 3D design at any time using the feature switcher in the action bar.

To return to the 2D Design inspiration feed from 3D mode, select Inspiration.

Navigating the 3D model

3D Design gives you full control to view, edit, and customize every facet of the property once your scan has been processed. This is where you move from idea exploration into accurate scoping and material selection.

Below is an overview of the core tools you will use inside the 3D design environment.

Material menu

The Material Menu makes it easier to locate and apply materials to different trades by combining powerful search with interactive filters and an organized interface.

Search and filter

Use the search bar at the top to find materials by color, brand, or material type without scrolling through long lists. Apply filters to narrow down available options. Filters automatically update based on your selections, so you only see relevant choices.

Action Bar

The action bar includes options to switch modes, select material groups, and use common editing tools such as split and convert.

Facet selection

  • Menu - Choose a material type (for example, trim or roofing) to automatically highlight and apply it to all matching areas on the 3D model.

  • Model - Click individual facets directly on the model to add or remove them. Selected areas are highlighted in fuchsia, making it easy to track active selections.

  • Action Bar - Surfaces are organized into groups, showing how many elements each one contains. Selecting a group overrides individual selections.

Top 3D editing tools

The Split, Convert, and Remove tools give you flexibility and precision when refining exterior designs. Whether you are adding a horizontal transition trim, creating a brick or masonry base, or adjusting window details, these tools let you make clean, accurate updates directly within the 3D model.

Split

Split allows you to divide a wall or trim into multiple segments, creating separate design areas such as horizontal trim, accent panels, or material transitions. You can split as many times as needed.

How to Add a Split to a Wall

  • Open your project in Workspace and select the Split tool from the toolbar.

  • Deselect any active walls if needed, then enter Split Mode.

  • Select a wall to split, and click Next.

  • Use the adjustment bar or measurement input to precisely define your split height or location.

  • Click Apply to create a new facet. Your wall is now divided into two segments.

How to add a split to trim

  • Deselect any active trims if needed, then enter Split Mode.

  • Select a trim to split, and click Next.

  • Use the adjustment bar or measurement input to precisely define your split height or location.

  • Click Apply. Your trim is now divided into two segments.

TIP: Use the zoom and measure tools to align splits with existing architectural features, like trim edges or window tops.

Removing a split

You can remove a split immediately after creating it by using the Undo button.Once you continue making additional updates to the model after a split is created, the split can no longer be manually removed.

This is intentional and helps protect the accuracy and integrity of the design. Removing a split after other design changes could cause unintended consequences or misalignments in the model.

If you’ve made several design updates after creating a split and need to remove it, the recommended approach is to start a new design rather than modifying the existing one.

TIP: Before creating a split, save your design. This allows you to easily revert if you decide the split isn’t needed.

Convert walls and trim

The conversion tool makes it easy to transform a wall into a trim (for features like horizontal trim) or a trim into a wall (for features like brick base).

How to convert wall to trim

  • After creating a split, select the new wall segment.

  • Click Convert to Trim from the toolbar.

  • The segment automatically becomes a trim and inherits the color and style of your existing trims.

  • To ensure consistency, use Select All Trims to verify that your belly band matches other trim elements.

How to convert trim to a wall

  • Select an existing trim segment (for example, at the base of a wall).

  • Click Convert to Wall.

  • The segment now behaves like a wall surface, perfect for applying wall materials like brick or siding to create a brick base or other architectural bases.

TIP: Use conversion tools to maintain realistic continuity between material types (for example, extending brick details below transition trim).

Removing shutters

A simpler, cleaner workflow for managing window details. You can now remove or restore shutters in a single click.

  • Open your Shutters category in the material panel.

  • Click Remove Shutters and they’ll disappear instantly from the model.

  • To restore them, use the Undo button or reload from a saved design.

TIP: If you’ve saved your design before removing shutters, reloading that version will bring them back automatically.

Save & share your designs

Save designs

Once you've chosen and applied your preferred materials to the 3D model (e.g. roof shingles, siding, or trim) click Save in the top right corner of workspace.

You'll have the option to name the design version, as well.

Share designs

Click the Share button in Workspace. A link is created and temporarily saved to your computer’s memory, so you don’t need to copy anything yourself. You can immediately paste it into a text message or email for a homeowner, team member, or partner to review.

Anytime that particular 3D design is changed, the share link you previously sent to others will automatically update as well. No need to generate more than one share link.

Note that your saved work does not automatically transfer across modes. Designs you save in 2D stay in 2D, and designs you save in 3D stay in 3D.

Need to review the property measurements? Switch to measurements mode.
