General

Who can use 3D Design?

Construction Pros can use 3D Design to view, edit, and customize every facet of a property once a scan has processed. This is where you move from idea exploration into accurate scoping and material selection.

You can generate a share link for a homeowner, but when they open the 3D design via that link, the measurement PDF and the model measurements will not be visible. They will not have the ability to edit the design either.

To grant editing access, invite them via the Project Details Page Share button.

How do I access 3D Design?

Access it in either of the following ways:

  • Option 1: Tap 3D from the Measurements card on the project details page.

  • Option 2: Select a model, or tap View 3D model from the 3D card on the project details page.

Note: To access 2D Design, go to your project details page and click or tap Start designing in 2D from the 2D Design card. 2D and 3D are now separate entry points.

When is 3D Design available for a project?

3D Design uses the measurements data to create a scaled digital twin of the property. Once your scan has fully processed and the measurements are also ready for review, you can view, edit, and customize every facet of the model.

If you want to start designing sooner, go to your project details page and tap Start designing in 2D from the 2D Design card to create a 2D design using one of your exterior scan photos.

Once the measurements for the project are ready to view, you can transfer the 2D Design to the 3D model from the project details page by selecting the 3D card.

Platform Functionality

How does Design integrate with other Hover features, and what is the difference between 2D and 3D?

Hover Design works hand-in-hand with the rest of the Hover platform, helping you move from early inspiration to a confirmed project scope and estimate.

2D Design is typically used early in the process to explore ideas quickly. It lets you try out materials and colors using a single photo, making it an easy way to start a conversation and help a homeowner visualize options right away.

3D Design is usually used later, once a scan has been submitted and the 3D model and measurements are ready to view. At that stage, 3D Design helps you confirm materials, scope, and architectural details so you can finalize decisions and build an accurate estimate.

Both 2D and 3D Design are available inside Hover Workspace. They are accessed from separate entry points on your project details page:

  • To open 2D Design, tap Start designing in 2D from the 2D Design card.

  • To open 3D Design, tap View 3D model from the 3D card, or select the Measurements or Estimates card.

Note: Saved work does not automatically transfer across both modes today. Designs you save in 2D will stay in 2D, and designs you save in 3D will stay in 3D.

Why do my materials look different in 3D compared to how they looked in 2D?

  • 2D and 3D are designed to support different stages of the workflow. 2D Design helps homeowners explore ideas and align on direction, while 3D Design is used for accurate scoping, measurements, and estimating.

  • When a design is transferred from 2D to 3D, the system carries over limited material intent from explicitly selected materials. Exact textures, colors, and finishes from 2D do not transfer, and materials in 3D are applied using the 3D material system.

  • It's expected that materials will be reviewed and adjusted in 3D before finalizing quantities or estimates.

Can I transfer a 2D design into the 3D model?

Yes — Hover offers a beta 2D → 3D transfer feature. For best results:

  • Use a simple 2D design with one material per category (e.g., one siding and one roofing selection).

  • Complex or highly detailed 2D edits may not fully carry over yet, as this feature is still evolving.

If you have made extensive edits in 2D, it's recommended to review and adjust materials in the 3D Design after transfer.

Can I view measurements on the 3D model?

Yes. Measurements are now integrated directly into the 3D view — no mode switching required. You can:

  • View measurements inline with each material card.

  • See facet-level details and area measurements by selecting the Facet toggle — each facet displays its label (e.g. SI-1, SI-2) and area.

  • View line segment lengths for roof and wall categories by switching to the Segment tab.

  • See the model automatically adjust to show measurement labels when you open the measurements panel — the material layer is temporarily removed for better visibility.

  • Download the original measurement PDF for reference (it will always reflect the original scan and model, not saved design changes).

When you make a material change, the view shifts back automatically. The transitions happen without any manual switching.

Do design changes update the measurement PDF?

Design choices update the measurements shown on the 3D model in Workspace, but the downloadable PDF always reflects the original scan and model.

How do I apply materials to different trades?

When you open a project in 3D, you'll see the existing materials already on the house, organized by area with associated measurements. Select an area to see its current materials, then choose what to change.

To apply or change a material:

  1. Select an area from the control panel (e.g. Walls, Roof, Trim) or by clicking directly on the model.

  2. Select one or more materials from the panel and click Change.

  3. Navigate the drill-down to find your product: product type → brand → specific product → color variation.

  4. Preview the color applied to the house, then click Done to confirm.

To change a material you've already applied, click the variation name on the material card or select the card and press Change. Navigate back up the selection chain to choose a different type, brand, or product.

Tip: Use Recents or Search to skip the drill-down when you already know what you're looking for.

Can I select a specific wall or roof face to edit?

Yes. Click directly on the model or use Facet Selection from the action bar for more control over how materials are applied to your design, whether you're working on a large area or making detailed adjustments.

  • Automatic selection: Choose a material type (for example, trim or roofing) to automatically highlight and apply it to all matching areas on the 3D model.

  • Manual selection: Click individual facets directly on the model to add or remove them. Selected areas are highlighted in fuchsia, making it easy to track active selections.

  • Material groups: Surfaces are organized into groups, showing how many elements each one contains. Selecting a group overrides individual selections.

Can I add or remove shutters?

Yes, you can instantly remove or restore shutters with one click. This helps you show clean alternatives without distractions.

Note: Shutters can only be removed or restored in Workspace if they were present on the structure at the time of the exterior scan. Structures without shutters cannot have them added.

Can I split specific walls or trim?

Yes. Whether you need to divide a wall or trim into multiple segments for accent panels, horizontal trim, a stone base, etc., you can use the split tool. Splits can be applied multiple times for advanced designs.

Can I remove a split?

You can remove a split immediately after creating it by using the Undo button. Once you continue making additional updates to the model after a split is created, the split can no longer be manually removed.

This is intentional and helps protect the accuracy and integrity of the design. Removing a split after other design changes could cause unintended consequences or misalignments in the model.

If you've made several design updates after creating a split and need to remove it, the recommended approach is to start a new design rather than modifying the existing one.

Tip: Before creating a split, save your design. This allows you to easily revert if you decide the split isn't needed.

Can I convert walls to trim, and vice versa?

Yes. Depending on your project scope, you can convert wall and trim segments. From the action bar, select:

  • Convert to Trim: Ideal for horizontal trim or accent banding.

  • Convert to Wall: Enables brick or masonry bases and architectural features.

Converted segments inherit styling for consistency.

Can I save a 3D design

Yes. Once you've chosen and applied your preferred materials to the 3D model (e.g. roof shingles, siding, or trim), click Save in the top right corner of Workspace. You'll have the option to name the design version, as well.

Note: Saved work does not automatically transfer across both modes today. Designs you save in 2D will stay in 2D, and designs you save in 3D will stay in 3D.

Can I share designs with others?

Hover supports two ways to share a 3D design depending on the level of access you want to grant:

  • Option 1 — View-only share link (inside Workspace):

    • Click Share from inside the 3D model in Workspace. A design link will automatically generate and copy to your clipboard so you can paste it into a text or email for a homeowner, team member, or partner to review. Recipients can view the 3D design only — they cannot edit it and they won't see measurement PDFs or measurement data.

  • Option 2 — Collaborator invite (from the Project page):

    • To give someone editing access to designs, go back to the Project details page, click Share at the project level, select Homeowner, enter their email, and send the invite. Invited collaborators get access to both 2D Designs and the 3D Model, but not measurements or estimates.

The share link reflects the most recently saved version of that specific 3D design. If you make changes after sharing, those updates will not appear in the shared link until you save the design again. Once saved, anyone using the original link will see the updated version — no new link is required.

Note: At this time, you and the homeowner cannot work on the same design simultaneously. Real-time collaboration is planned for a future update.
