What's new? You can now enable or disable snapping when placing custom measurements in Workspace. Snapping helps measurement endpoints automatically align to nearby edges and model geometry, making it easier to get precise, custom line measurements directly on the 3D model. When you need more flexibility, snapping can be turned off at any time.
Overview
Snapping enhances the Custom Measure Tool by helping measurement endpoints lock onto nearby edges and align with model geometry. This reduces small placement errors and makes it easier to trust the distances you’re checking—especially when measuring between known features like walls, windows, or corners.
Snapping is optional and can be toggled on or off while measuring. When enabled, endpoints will attach to nearby edges and follow alignment cues. When disabled, measurements can be placed freely for full manual control.
This update builds on the existing Custom Measure Tool and does not change how measurements are created, edited, or removed—only how precisely they can be placed.
How to use it
Zoom in on the area you want to measure before entering Measure mode.
Why? Once Measure mode is active, you won’t be able to pan or zoom the model.
Enter Measure mode by:
Clicking Measure in the Workspace action bar, or
Pressing the M key on your keyboard.
Ensure snapping is set to your preference:
Toggle snapping on to automatically align endpoints to nearby edges.
Toggle snapping off to place endpoints freely without alignment assistance.
Click once to place the starting point of your measurement.
Move your cursor toward the next edge or point.
When snapping is enabled, the endpoint will automatically attach to nearby edges and align with parallel geometry.
Click again to place the endpoint and complete the measurement.
Continue adding additional measurements as needed - always entering Measure mode before placing each custom measurement.
To edit or remove a custom measurement:
Click on the measurement, then:
Tap the pencil icon to adjust the measurement placement
Tap the trash can icon to delete the custom measurement from the model
Pro tip: For best results, zoom in closely before measuring and leave snapping enabled when measuring between known edges like windows, doors, or wall intersections.
Why this is better
Snapping makes custom measurements more reliable by keeping them aligned with the model itself—not just where you clicked.
With snapping-enabled measurements:
Endpoints align to nearby edges, reducing small placement errors.
Measurements stay visible as you rotate, zoom, and navigate the model.
Multiple measurements can be viewed at the same time, without switching tools.
Measurements can be edited or removed at any point, reducing rework.
Having accurate, snapped measurements directly on the 3D model makes it easier to verify distances, avoid rework, and move forward with confidence—knowing the numbers make sense in context.
