Taking successful photos for interior measurements

Updated over a week ago

Watch this 2 minute video to see how simple it is to request interior measurements with HOVER, or continue reading below for the step-by-step instructions.

Our guided experience makes it simple to capture all the data you need with just an app. Every step of the way, we provide short instructional videos, checklists, reminders, and real time capture feedback so you can take photos with confidence.

Before getting started

You will be asked to take photos room-by-room and will see a pre-capture checklist reminding you to:

  • Open all doors to the room

  • Uncover all windows

  • Turn on all lights

Once you've prepared the space, you're ready to start capturing!

Things to keep in mind:

  • Capture one room at a time

  • Each level of a multilevel property requires a separate HOVER job

  • Whenever possible, include the ceiling and floor in each photo

  • All rooms captured must be connected to be included in the floor plan

    • Otherwise we will use our partial build solution to reconstruct the largest contiguous area

What's an example of a 'large contiguous area'?

  • Imagine the green sections below depict all the captured rooms a user submitted to HOVER.

  • Since nothing was captured to connect the (2) contiguous areas (like the hallway or additional bedroom), we will only construct a floor plan for the largest area of rooms that share borders and doorways: the Dining, Great Room, and Kitchen.

Capture interior photos

Taking photos for interior measurements is a simple 3-step process. For every room captured, you'll follow the same basic pattern:

Taking entry photos

Capture the entryway of the room from the outside looking in

  • Press the shutter button and pan from one side of the entryway to the other

  • The app will use auto-capture to take the exact photos required

    • Focus on ensuring the doorframe, ceiling and floor are visible

    • The app will ask you to confirm that you did everything for the entryway- if you have any doubts, feel free to Capture more

Taking interior photos

Step into the room and walk to the nearest corner of the room with your back against the wall

  • Press the shutter button and do a full sweep of the room from wall to wall

    • The camera will automatically take photos

  • With your back still against the wall, take steps around the perimeter of the room with the camera facing the center of the room

  • When you get to the next corner, do another full sweep of the room from wall to wall

    • The camera will automatically take photos

  • Whenever possible, include the ceiling and floor in each photo

  • The app will ask you to confirm that you did everything for the interior of the room

    • If you have any doubts, feel free to Capture more

Taking damage photos

When you're done taking photos around the perimeter of the room, the app will ask if you want to take photos of any damage

  • If your insurance company has invited you to capture photos, this is your opportunity to document the damage in that room with as many photos as you want to take. They'll be sent to the insurance adjuster to review with your claim.

    • When taking damage photos, use your best judgement - share whatever you think is important

    • When in doubt, take multiple photos of the damage both close up and from a distance

  • If you do not have any damage photos to include, you can tap Skip

Helpful tips

  • Furniture

    • You don't need to climb on, lean over, or move furniture. Simply move around it.

  • Stairs

    • We are currently unable to build stairs so we do not require photos from within a stairwell. However, you can provide a picture of the top or bottom of a staircase within the space. It will give us a basic understanding of where they are located in the room.

  • Entry photos

    • Capture at least 3 photos per room but add as many additional as you want.

  • Interior photos

    • Capture at least 12 photos per room but add as many additional as you want.

Provide an optional reference measurement

After completing and submitting photos for a room, you'll have the opportunity to tell us more about the space you just captured - depending on the type of room it is or its location in the home, the app may require a reference measurement.

If a measurement is required:

  • Choose a wall, door or window that is clearly visible from one of the photos you took, and use measuring tape to collect the measurement.

  • From the photo gallery, select a photo that shows the object you measured:

    • Tap a start point for the measurement (such as the top of a wall)

      • You'll see crosshairs added to the photo

    • Tap the end point for the measurement (such as the bottom of the same wall)

      • A second set of crosshairs will appear on the photo

    • Type the total number of inches into the given box and

      • Press Done

Receive the deliverables

Not only will you receive a HOVER PDF deliverable for interior measurements, but if you are an Insurance Adjuster intending to use Xactimate or CoreLogic (Symbility) to complete your claim, you can also export compatible measurement file types to import into either platform.

You will receive a notification when your interior measurements PDF and files are ready. Typically this will occur in 3 hours or less but may take longer, depending on the size and complexity of the order.

If there are rooms that could not be reconstructed (due to heavy obstructions or missing transition shots) we will notify you within the pdf:

  • The second page of the PDF will always include a summary of all the rooms captured and denote whether or not they were successfully reconstructed. Tips will be included for how to best capture a room that was not built.

For reference, here's an example of a partially reconstructed interior PDF.

What if I still need those rooms built?

  • You can do a new capture for the undelivered rooms. This will be processed as its own project.

  • Billing is based on square footage of what is delivered in a floor plan, not by what is captured. Therefore, you will only be charged for the missing room(s) if you can successfully capture them in a new order.

How do I export the deliverables?

  • Navigate to the property details page within your HOVER account

  • Click Export

  • Select the file(s) you want to export

  • Click Download
